Making Paper Pulp Samples – Part 5: The Pastry Brush Handle

In this part of my Paper Pulp Samples series, I want to show you a simple but effective technique for creating soft, organic indentations in paper pulp using… a pastry brush handle! The rounded end of the handle makes it perfect for pressing smooth, natural-looking shapes into the surface, giving the material a beautiful, stone-like texture.

Of course, you don’t have to use the exact same tool — anything with a rounded handle will work just as well. Don’t be afraid to experiment and see what kinds of marks you can create.

These kinds of patterns can be used in many different ways: in small decorative elements, sculptural surfaces, or larger art projects. I used this technique to make my rock-textured vase, which you can see in a separate post here.

I love these tiny experiments because every sample leads to new ideas, unexpected shapes, and different ways to play with textures.
